In June, a group of educators had the opportunity to visit the Morgan Sindall site for the Reading Library Refurbishment—a project that promises to breathe new life into a former council building, transforming it into a vibrant hub that will house both a modern library and a new Business Centre.
Upon arrival, the group, including Careers & Enterprise Coordinator Nikki Penman-Fea, were warmly welcomed with a light breakfast of pastries, tea, and coffee before gathering around a conference table for a series of insightful presentations. Representatives from the University of Reading shared how they collaborate closely with Morgan Sindall, offering a glimpse into the power of educational and industry partnerships.
They then heard from Dennis Owusu, Morgan Sindall’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) representative. His presentation was particularly enlightening, highlighting the broad range of careers available within the organisation.
We were surprised and inspired by the variety of roles that extended far beyond traditional construction jobs.
— Nikki Penman-Fea
The morning continued with a guided site tour led by Dennis. After donning full personal protective equipment—hi-vis jackets, hard hats, goggles, and steel-toe boots—the group stepped onto the site to see the transformation in progress. They met the Site Manager, who enthusiastically shared insights about her role and the intricacies of repurposing the existing structure for its exciting new functions.
The day was not only informative but also inspirational. Teachers left brimming with ideas about how to bring the world of construction, careers, and community development into the classroom. It was a powerful reminder of how real-world experiences can enrich the curriculum and spark curiosity among students.
